THE Nigerian Ropes Plc, world leader in the manufacture of ropes in cordage technology, has raised the alarm to the public and especially its customers in the oil and gas, mining, fishing, construction and shipping industries over its products, which were being adulterated.

Briefing the press at the Nigerian Ropes Plc, Eric Moore, Lagos office yesterday, the Managing Director, Mr. Joao Pereira said Nigerian Ropes products adhere to both national and international standards and maintain positive quality assurance and control practices.

Pereira added that her test certificates are now being faking by some ropes businessmen to cover sub-standard importation of wire ropes.

Currently, about five companies based in Port Harcourt are being suspected to be involved in this illegal practice, he added.

He said due to this illegal act the company has commenced actions to mitigate faking of her Test Certificate, which includes redesigning of the existing Test Certificate format and changing the paper colour, which will take effect from September 2, 2013.

Meanwhile, the company urged caution and advised all stakeholders in ropes business using the Nigerian Ropes products to always ensure that genuine Nigerian products with corresponding certification are not just assumed but confirmed.

Stakeholder boost human capital management

In keeping with its commitment to improve the Nigerian corporate landscape through the development of capacity building programmes for business executives, Poise Nigeria Limited, a personality development and business image consultancy in conjunction with Enterprise development Centre (EDC) of Pan- Atlantic University, recently organised breakfast meetings to discuss a new approach to the protracted problem of poor employability skills in the nation’s work force.

The events which held at the EDC centre in Lagos and Abuja on 13th and 17th July, 2013 respectively, and saw in attendance CEOs and Human Resource Personnel from over 50 organisations, featured talks on the perennial problem of poor employability skills among Nigerian graduates and how the situation can be managed. The focus was on the challenges of recruiting qualified hands and safeguarding and improving the quality of an organization’s workforce by using an effective recruitment system. A key part of the conversation was a product known as PSENSE, a specially designed tool for human capital management, which takes into account and mitigates the basic challenges of the Nigerian labour force and the employability levels of our graduates. The product is an employability skills testing and certification platform designed by Poise Nigeria in collaboration with Biddle Consulting, United State.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, the Head of the Poise’ Graduate Finishing School, explained that it had become a necessity to have standardized assessment systems that allow for an objective and accurate measurement of the work readiness of a job candidate. According to her, today’s workplace requires that employees possess essential soft skills among which are the ability to think analytically and work strategically, articulate ideas effectively both in written  and spoken forms, work under pressure, solve problems creatively, possess good ICT skills and so on.  She pointed out that a candidate’s possession of such skills was not easily ascertainable by screenings based on their class of degree or their performance in theoretical and abstract aptitude tests, but on a checkpoint system built to test for such skills.

At this point, she introduced the PSENSE Employability Skills Certification as an assessment tool that had been designed  not only to  test the intelligence quotient of the job candidate, but more importantly, to ascertain their work readiness through an evaluation of their employability skills level.

Dare  stated that the product would reduce the chances of making  hiring mistakes because it would provide employers with a clear picture of a prospective employee’s intelligence quotient and their possession of the essential work place soft skills. She further explained that unlike the typical recruitment aptitude tests which were capable of presenting employers with only a report on the intelligence level of the candidates, the PSENSE Employability Skills Certification was built to test the job candidate’s mental prowess, and their possession of the crucial work place skills: ICT skills, problem solving ability, interpersonal skills, writing ability, knowledge of the English grammar, time management ability, emotional intelligence, team work skills among others.

Dare, who is also an employability skills trainer and a recruiter, pointed out that the product was customizable, and could be adapted to the suit the recruitment needs of different organisations. She also said that the product could be used to test and recruit for specific job functions, managerial roles, and in-house testing of incumbent employees to determine their training needs.

Also speaking at the event, the Director of the Enterprise Development Centre, Peter Bamkole, lauded the product as the possible solution to the perennial problem of poor employability skills. Bamkole noted that the possession of good soft skills had become as imperative as hard skills for the successful performance of a job, and that a tool that promised to ascertain a candidate’s possession of the requisite work skills and take the guesswork out of the hiring process was a welcome development.

The Group CEO of Poise Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Mavi Isibor also said that the company was presently conducting employability skills seminars in some universities, training undergraduates in employability skills and working with recruiters and trainers to standardize training and certification.
According to her, the only way to revive the work force and secure the nation’s future was set a standard. She therefore called on organisations present to request for the certification, and that this in return would compel job seekers to seek the necessary training required to acquire the certification.
The product was well received by those in attendance, and the event ended with a demonstration of the workings of the tool.

Abubakar Shekau Is Dead, Says JTF

The Joint Task Force (JTF) operating in Borno State, Monday said Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, may have died as a result of wounds sustained during an assault against the group a few weeks ago.

In a press statement today, spokesman of the JTF, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa said, “Intelligence report available to the Joint Task Force Operation Restore Order revealed that Abubakar Shekau, the most dreaded and wanted Boko Haram terrorists leader may have died.

“He died of gunshot wounds received in an encounter with the JTF troops in one of their camps at Sambisa Forest on 30 June 2013. Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide – a border community in Cameroun for treatment which he never recovered from.

“It is greatly believed that Shekau might have died between 25 July to 3 August, 2013.”

Among other crimes of Shekau was the masterminding of the kidnap of the seven French citizens and that of the elder statesman Alhaji (Dr) Shettima Ali Monguno, according to Musa.

The JTF also said, Shekau was responsible for numerous killings of Islamic clerics in Northern Nigeria.

“He was also responsible for bombings of many places of worship and public buildings including Police and United Nations Headquarters in Abuja.”

The JTF spokesman added that perhaps the most wanted Nigerian ever, Shekau, was dead before the video where he charged his followers to continue the war on Nigeria released during the Eid- El- Fitr celebration.

“The recent video released on 13 August, 2013 by the purported sect leader was dramatized by an imposter to hoodwink the sect members to continue with the terrorism and to deceive the undiscerning minds,” Sagir added, while calling on members of the Boko Haram to lay down their arms and embrace the Federal Government’s offer for dialogue.

The JTF however did not provide a photo or confirm that it has the body of Shekau.

24 killed in gold mine collapse in Sudan's Northern State

At least 24 people were killed after a gold mine collapsed in Sudan's Northern State, Khartoum's Akhir Lahza daily reported Monday.

"Twenty-four people have been killed at Alboom, one of the civil gold exploration sites in Dalgo area in Northern State, after a 160-meter deep gold mine collapsed," the report said. "All attempts to discover the bodies have failed as the gold mine collapsed more than three times," the paper quoted an eyewitness as saying. It added that the concerned authorities were notified with the accident, urging to prohibit exploration at the old gold mines to protect citizens. Gold mine collapse accidents recently recurred across Sudan, the last of them was in North Darfur State in which scores were killed.

Ajimobi pardons 1,000 sacked teachers

The over 1,000 secondary school teachers, who were relieved of their jobs some months ago due to age falsification in the state Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), could not hide their feelings as they burst into frenzy on hearing of their pardon by Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

The affected teachers who were sacked as a result of age falsification, could not hide their happiness as they were full of praises to the governor for tempering justice with mercy.

The governor, while addressing the teachers at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan, said that his administration decided to review their cases after persistent interventions by the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and stakeholders in the education sector.

He said that a committee had already been put in place which is reviewing the cases of the affected teachers, stressing that those with falsified ages would have their ages regularized and be finally reinstated, while those already due for retirement would be allowed to retire and be paid their entitlements.

Governor Ajimobi described teaching as a noble profession, saying that his administration would continue to place great emphasis on integrity in the state civil service, especially among teachers who were responsible for the training of future leaders.

The governor said that even though his administration has a zero tolerance for fraud and corruption, there was the need to thoroughly review the cases so as to ensure that the legal maxim which says that it was better to set 99 guilty free than to allow a single righteous to suffer injustice was fulfilled.

``I want to assure you that before the end of the month, we would have concluded the review of all the cases and we would forgive and pardon many of you,” the governor said.

Some of the affected teachers, on their part, publicly admitted that they falsified their ages and pleaded for pardon and eventual reinstatement, pledging that they would never be involved in such fraudulent act again throughout their remaining years in service.

The governor promised a thorough review of such cases.

Ex-militants Give NASS 5-Day Ultimatum Over Kerosene Scarcity

If by next Monday, adequate measures are not put in place to flood Nigeria with enough kerosene for the citizens of the country, then ex-militants would disrupt activities at the National Assembly.

The former militants released this threat on Wednesday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state under the aegis of the Leadership, Peace and Cultural Development Initiatives (LPCDI) saying they would fight to ensure that the problem is resolved.

They maintained though, that the protest march to the National Assembly would be peaceful and non-violent.

For over a month now, Nigerian consumers of the product have faced serious challenges owing to the scarcity of kerosene with the product now selling for between N140 and N150 per litre.

The ex-militants further lamented the inability of the Pipeline and Product Marketing Company (PPMC) to increase supply of the product. The PPMC and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had several times allayed fears that the situation would be brought under control. This has not happened.

One other reason the former militants are threatening to protest is their claim that opposition elements in the country had always carried out unwarranted attack on President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration.

The militants urged that an independent panel be set up to investigate this perpetual scarcity of kerosene. They also advocated for the sack of the Managing Director of PPMC, Mr. Haruna Momoh, for failing find urgent solutions to the crisis.

The statement from the group signed by its President-General, Pastor Wilson Reuben; and Secretary-General Ezekiel Akpasibewei, said the group was collaborating with other civil society groups in the country for the protest

"The scarcity of petroleum products, especially kerosene across the country is a national embarrassment. Preliminary investigations by the ex-militant leaders have shown that the scarcity is man-made and a deliberate act of sabotage to the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan in the oil and gas sector.

"The pertinent questions to be answered are: 'where are the huge Kerosene allocations to the Niger-Delta states and the other parts of the country? What happened to the huge importation quota for kerosene? Why is it that only the Northwest region of the country has regular and well circulated kerosene?

"Why are the South-west and South-south regions deprived of the product? Why is it that kerosene, when available, is sold at exorbitant prices instead of the approved official pump price of N50 per litre? Why is it that Kerosene, when available, is only found in private petrol stations?

"Our move to peacefully protest to the National Assembly is to call the attention of the members of the National Assembly, particularly the chairmen and members of the committees on petroleum downstream of both chambers of the National Assembly to investigate the management of the Pipeline and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), led by its Managing Director, Mr. Haruna Momoh, for its glaring failure to effectively address the issue of kerosene scarcity in the country.

"Mr. Haruna Momoh, from available evidence, has shown incompetence and complicity in the scarcity of Kerosene. Mr. Haruna Momoh has also been enmeshed severally in fraudulent allocations of kerosene to incompetent and fictitious marketers. He should be sacked with immediate effect for fraud and incompetence."

The ex-militants said they were troubled by the kerosene scarcity "because of its importance to the welfare of the masses. The masses daily experience untold difficulties and agonising moments in their bids to get kerosene for their daily needs.

"It is, therefore, as a matter of urgency and to save the country from disaster that the former freedom fighters have decided to storm the National Assembly to impress it on its leadership and insist on formal investigation of the man-made scarcity."

He said the disrespect for President Jonathan had become "an issue of mockery that a failed former governor in the South-west state and caretaker party chairman would openly invite the President to join his baby party.

"Have you ever seen or heard of such inglorious invitation to President Obama by the Republicans in spite of some difficulties in policy implementation faced by the Democrats led administration?

"It is a shame that opposition political parties heat up the polity and reduce the status of their country's seat of governance with their unguarded comments.

"We want to use this medium to inform the public that as patriotic, progressive and development-oriented Nigerians, we will no longer take kindly the unwarranted verbal attacks on the person of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan."

Tambuwal Preaches Peace, Unity among Nigerians

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has urged Nigerians to promote attributes that unite the country, rather than laying emphasis on seemingly divisive tendencies among the various ethnic and religious groups in the country.

In a message to commemorate this year's Eid-el-fitr sallahcelebration issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam, Tambuwal appealed to leaders at all levels to close ranks and work for the unity and progress of the nation.

He said the devotion and sacrifices made by Muslims in the last 30 days should be replicated in our every day lives, adding that the month-long period of self-restraint should serve as reminder of our commitment to our Fatherland and humanity.

"The same way we all remembered the less fortunate and those afflicted by poverty and disease during Ramadan, I implore us to carry over those attributes to our engagements after Ramadan. Only by so doing can we truly say we have imbibed the teachings of the Holy month into our every day lives," the Speaker stated.

While congratulating Nigerians, especially Muslims, for witnessing this year's Eid-el-fitr, the Speaker said the House of Representatives will at all times strive for the unity, peace and development of the country.

Corps member attacked by suspected cultists

Miss Folakemi Akinbode, a 26-year-old currently undergoing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Bayelsa State, has been hospitalised at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri after she was attack by suspected cultists.

The Ondo-born graduate of Nursing from Madonna University was returning from work when she was ambushed by two suspected cultists along a lonely bush path leading to the corpers’ lodge where she resides at Obunagha community in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.

The attackers inflicted machete wounds on her right hand, nearly severing it. They then fled the scene. The real target was her head but she raised the hand in defence, it was learnt.

The victim was said to have run to the lodge with her injuries screaming for help after which she collapsed and lost consciousness due to the severity of the injury and bleeding.

“Although she had been given three pints of blood, she is yet to regain consciousness,” a source said.

Traditional ruler of the community, Chief Apoh Godgive consequently ordered the immediate constitution of a vigilante group in the community, in order to identify the criminals. Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa State Police Command, DSP Alex Akhigbe, confirmed the incident, saying the command had started hunting for the hoodlums.

Nigeria imposes curfew on Boko Haram flash point

Nigeria's Yobe State on Tuesday announced a 24-hour curfew on Potiskum after attacks by Boko Haram terrorists.

Military spokesman in the state Lazarus Eli, in a statement made available to Xinhua, called on the residents of Potiskum to cooperate and abide by the order.

"Residents of Potiskum are enjoined to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by remaining indoors until the curfew is lifted," the military spokesperson said.

On July 6, exactly a month ago, the Boko Haram sect killed at least 29 students and a teacher at a boarding school in Potiskum.

Meanwhile, security operatives have also intensified surveillance in the city, including stop-and-search operations, to ensure that no attacks are carried out during the forthcoming Muslims' Eid el-fitr celebration in the state.

Since 2009, Yobe State in the northeast region of Nigeria has witnessed many deadly attacks in which women and children were mostly killed.

Yobe was among the three northeast states including Adamawa and Borno hit by insurgency, where President Goodluck Jonathan recently imposed state of emergency.

Jonathan, Mark, Uduaghan, Ajimobi, Tinubu condole Fashola on father’s death

President Goodluck Jonathan, Senate President David Mark, Governors Emmanuel Uduaghan and Abiola Ajimobi, as well as Senator Bola Tinubu, have conveyed sincere condolences to Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State, on the death of his father, Pa Ibrahim Ademola Fashola, 79, who died on Monday morning in Lagos.

“On behalf of himself, his family, the Federal Government and the people of Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan conveys sincere condolences to Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on the death of his father, Pa Ibrahim Ademola Fashola earlier today in Lagos.

“As they mourn Pa Fashola, President Jonathan urges Governor Fashola, his family and people of Lagos State to give thanks to God Almighty for the octogenarian’s very exemplary and accomplished life.

“The President urges to them to be comforted by the knowledge that Pa Fashola is returning to his Creator as a very blessed and fulfilled man who lived to see his son become a two-term Governor of one of Nigeria’s most populous and vibrant states,” the Presidency said in a statement.

Senator Mark in his message said Pa Fashola lived an eventful and accomplished life worthy of emulation.

"I received the news of the death of your beloved father with shock and sadness at a time his wealth of experience and wisdom is most needed. I am however consoled that your father lived an exemplary life and left a legacy of selfless service to the community.

"Your track record of achievements especially your excellent performance as the governor of Lagos State bears eloquent testimony that your father left a legacy of integrity and excellence.

"I can only urge you to continue in that stead and live up the billing as a further testimony that Pa Fashola lives," Mark wrote in a statement, adding that history will be kind to Pa Fashola for his meritorious services and contributions to the development of the community especially in Lagos State.

"Pa Fashola will surely be given a pride of place when history especially that of Lagos State is written," he said.

Uduaghan in his condolence message specifically stated that the people and Government of Delta State share in the pain and sense of loss occasioned by the death of his pa Fashola.

"The people and Government of Delta State share in this grief and pain. We understand the sense of loss that this death has engendered. We are with Governor Fashola every step of the Way", he stated.

The Delta Governor further noted that the elder Fashola died at a time when his fatherly love, care and wisdom were still needed, but added that like all mortals, the deceased had to bow to the will of the Almighty God who is the author of life.

Uduaghan prayed God to grant the people and Government of Lagos State as well as the entire family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Governor Ajimobi of Oyo State in his message described the demise of the patriarch of the Fashola dynasty as a great loss to the family.

“Papa was a devout Muslim, community leader and a shining example of humility and philanthropy, as he shared virtually everything he had with the needy, irrespective of where they came from,’’ he remarked.

Although the governor said that the deceased would be sorely missed by his immediate family, the people of Lagos State and indeed, the whole of South-West, he, however, admonished Governor Fashola and his other siblings to take solace in the fact that he lived a fulfilled life.

Sen. Ajimobi prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased, and the Fashola family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

"He died a fulfilled and happy man. He gave Lagos and Nigeria his best" – Tinubu

Also, Bola Tinubu, who is presently abroad on medicals, expressed great shock and deep sadness over Pa Fashola’s death.

“While in the USA, I received the news of the death of Pa Ademola Fashola, the father of the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, with great shock and deep sadness. His demise even at the ripe age of 79 years is a hurtful one and we have indeed lost a true, honest, steadfast and dependable father. Pa Ademola Fashola, a man of integrity, was a father no one would want to lose at a time like this. My family and I send our heartfelt condolences to Governor Fashola on this great loss,” Tinubu said.

“We must find solace and take comfort in the fact that Baba lived a fulfilled life and passed away with the knowledge that he gave his very best to his family, to Lagos State and Nigeria. There is no greater testimony to this than his son, Babatunde Fashola, the Governor of Lagos who has given a new meaning to good governance and purposeful leadership.

“Pa Fashola, Lagosians thank you. Nigeria thanks you for giving us a son like Babatunde Raji Fashola.

“Governor Fashola must remain strong in the face of this great loss of a dotting father, especially as all his other siblings look up to him for strength and courage. May Allah  (SWT) be his consolation and grant him peace at a time like this,” the former Governor of Lagos State said.

Sudan, South Sudan armies clash on oil rich Heglig border

One Sudanese soldier was killed Monday during a military confrontation between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the South Sudanese Army in the oil-rich Heglig area on the Sudanese territories.

Sawarmy Khalid Saad, spokesman of the SAF, said in a statement that a patrol of the South Sudanese Army entered the oil-rich Heglig area on the Sudanese territories, the official Sudanese News Agency reported.  The report added that a Sudanese soldier was killed and two others injured in the fighting before the patrol pulled back to South Sudan. "At 3:00 p.m. (1200 GMT) today, a patrol from South Sudan crossed our border at Tashween site, getting a few kilometers into our territories in the Heglig area," Saad said. "The situation has been contained by the leadership of the two sides and the conditions are now stable," he added.

The Heglig area, which had been a scene of bloodshed between the two sides, was seized by South Sudan army on April 10, 2012 and taken back by the Sudanese army 20 days later. Monday's confrontation came at a time when the two sides had agreed to settle their differences, particularly with regard to the disputed areas, through peaceful means under the mediation of the African Union.  New clashes flared up recently between the Sudanese army and rebels erupted in the country's main oil-producing state of South Kordofan, bordering South Sudan.Diplomats said that hardliners among the rebels and inside the Sudanese army usually try to stir up clashes during such mediation efforts as they do not want a peaceful settlement.

Khartoum accuses Juba of supporting insurgents operating on Sudanese soil and using the South's territory as retreat bases, which Juba has denied.  South Sudan seceded from Sudan in 2011 under a peace deal, ending decades of civil war. But the two sides have so far failed to demarcate their joint border and come to agreement on disputed border territories. The United Nations currently deploys a peacekeeping mission in the disputed region of Abyei which is claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan. The UN force helps to mark the border in the oil-rich region and monitors a demilitarized zone.

5 Dead As Rival Civilian JTF Groups Battle For Supremacy

At least five persons were killed over the weekend following a deadly clash between two rival vigilante youth groups seeking to curb the menace posed by the Boko Haram in Borno State.

The two groups, popularly called ‘civilian JTF’ were fighting over the control of Bui, a town about 190 kilometers from Maiduguri, residents said.

"The Civilian JTF in Biu had asked those that came from Maiduguri to leave the town because their presence is likely to cause more harm than good to residents of Biu town," Abdullahi Mohammed said, adding that it was during the ejection of the Maiduguri civilian JTF that fight ensued between the two youth groups, which led to the killing of five persons.

" I saw five dead bodies before I was rushed to hospital. It is possible the casualty figure may be more than five because only two of us survived the shooting, I can't tell where other dead bodies were deposited," he said.

Tension Brews between Jonathan, Dickson over Hotel Project

Ahead of the 2015 general elections, President Goodluck Jonathan and his protégé, Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson might already be dealing with a potentially sour relationship over delay in construction of a five-star hotel project flagged off years back.

Jonathan, as Governor of Bayelsa State back then, began constructing the hotel following the removal of then-Governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. Alamieyeseigha conceived the hotel project to bolster the state’s tourism capabilities but it was Jonathan who began pumping funds into it.

After he was nominated as vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), funding for the project became an avenue for financially fuelling the party’s 2007 presidential campaign. The scope of the project was also widened, ostensibly to allow for further siphoning of funds worth more than N5bn for the presidential election.

Timipre Sylva, who became Governor of Bayelsa after Jonathan, was not exactly a fan of the hotel project, which had gulped over 450 per cent of the total contract value while work remained below 40 per cent completion. His supposedly lackadaisical disposition to the project angered Jonathan, who was reportedly desperate to cover up for the amount of money laundered under the guise of erecting a five-star hotel. His thinking was that it would be difficult to question the huge spending once the project is completed.

With the arrival of his godson, Dickson as the new governor, President Jonathan had expected the completion of the project. But Dickson was himself unwilling to carry on with the project and instead sited a new five-star hotel project less than 1km away from Jonathan’s original project five-star hotel.

Dickson earmarked N3.5bn for the new hotel around Oxbow Lake, and hired a contractor named Anyim Osigwe Group, which is to collaborate with a foreign partner. Dickson also allocated N2.6bn for renovating the new government house with 19 presidential suites.

This development has reportedly landed Dickson in First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan’s bad books, particularly for refusing to turn in money to the stakeholders him in removing Timipre Sylva from office and installing him instead. Sylva is reportedly aware of the first lady’s stance as well as the disappointment of President Jonathan but he is reported to have himself expressed lack of confidence in President Jonathan.

“Dickson has of recent become very suspicious that President Jonathan may likely give him the Sylva Treatment by not allowing him to return for a second term,” a source said.

To avert this treatment, Dickson is reportedly finalising plans to secure the services of a judge, who would pronounce a judgment bringing the governorship election in the state from 2016 to 2015, which means the president will be too busy with his own election to be removing a governor. This judicial project, it is believed, will gulp N3bn.

It is also believed that Jonathan and his wife are considering Special Adviser to the President on Domestic Affairs, Hon. Waripamowei Dudafa. Dudafa was initially picked as Dickson`s running mate in the last gubernatorial elections, but was dropped.

But the Bayelsa Government has denied all these stories. “The story is not true. The Governor is concentrating on roads now. Several meetings have been held concerning the International Conference Centre and four-star hotel,” Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Research and Social Media said in a statement.

“In fact, the restoration administration is anchored on investment promotion and of course, that includes tourism. To underscore this, an Institute of Tourism and Hospitality management is being put in place. The institutions that will promote tourism are being established. It is untrue that Governor Dickson has abandoned the Tower Hotel.”

Boko Haram: Borno Requests For More Troops

IN order to track down  the fleeing members of the Boko Haram sect who have fled Maiduguri, the Borno State  capital, to the outskirts of the state, the  State Government on Wednesday requested  for the deployment of more troops to the state.

The request was made on a day the State Government inaugurated a 12-man committee to oversee the training of its youths  on behavioural change, empowerment and employment.

The State deputy governor, Alhaji Zanna Umar Mustapha, who made the request while receiving the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 12, Mr. Edgar Tam Nanakumo,  in his office, said Bama and two other Local Government Areas in the state are still infested with members of the sect.

Mustapha asked the AIG to deploy more policemen to the state to flush out the remnants of the Boko Haram sect in three Local Government Areas of the state where the insurgents are currently terrorising  the people.

Assuring that the government would collaborate with the police to ensure that peace fully returns to the state, the deputy governor said  lack of perimeter fencing had made many police stations and formations in the state susceptible to Boko Haram attacks.

He  noted  that the police might have recorded less casualties during attacks on them if their barracks were fenced ..

According to the deputy governor, "Most of the police stations in the state and country generally are not secured and this made it possible for the hoodlums to penetrate and wreck havoc.

"It is sad and regrettable that we've lost quite a number of policemen in the state and other parts of the country. The Federal Government should do something about it."

He advised that  the welfare of police men and women should be given more attention even as he called  for more training for the conventional police personnel  whom,  he said,  often disappear from scenes of Boko Haram atacks when confronted  by the superior fire power of the insurgents unlike the mobile force and anti/counter terrorism squad.

"We have seen policemen in other countries; well-equipped and being properly taken care of. That is why they do their work with passion because their welfare is guaranteed. It is when we take care  of our policemen and women that they can in turn protect us and police our communities well," he added.

Noting  that  Borno was a home of peace until few years ago when the Boko Haram insurgents began their offensive, he  assured that peace will eventually return, saying  the efforts of the volunteer youth groups were already paying off as no Boko Haram can now operate freely in Maiduguri due to the resistance from the residents.

In his speech earlier, the  AIG  said he was in the state to familiarise with the area,  government, people and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

He stressed further that  he was also using the visit to condole with the government and families of the policemen who were killed in Bama and other attacks by the Boko Haram.

Prison Officials Rape Terror Suspect - Keyamo

Barring any cover-up by the Nigerian Prisons Authorities, some top officials of the organization may end up in jail for raping and aiding in the rape a male inmate in Kuje prison.

Festus Keyamo, attorney of the rape victim cum terror suspect, Charles Okah, has decried the sodomisation of his client by officials of the Nigerian Prison.

In a letter dated, Tuesday, July 30, 2013, addressed to the Comptroller-General of Prisons and titled open compliant on the attempt to sodomize Mr. Charles Okah by Mr. Isah Musa(The chief clerk), Tanko Gokuje,(The assistant yard master) and three other warders in kuje prisons,Mr Keyamo, gave a narrative of the sodomisation.

In his words, “on Wednesday, 3rd July, 2013, at about 6.30 am, some Prison Warders, specifically Mr. Isah Musa (the Chief Clerk), Mr. Tanko Gokuje, (the Assistant Yard Master) and three (3) other Prison Warders  entered Mr.Okah`s cell (No.1) and demanded to search his anus because they claimed they had information that he was hiding “incriminating” materials therein. Before entering his cell, they made sure all other inmates were locked up in their various cells.”

“Having heard from other inmates in the past that this is a known pattern used by warders to sodomize inmates, Mr.Okah initially resisted the attempt, but was forced to succumb after much pressure and insistence by the culprits.”

“However, having succumbed, to the utter shock and dismay of Mr.Okah, he saw that Mr. Isah Musa pulled off his clothes and sustained erection and attempted to carry out the acts of sodomy on him.”

“To achieve this, Mr. Okah was then held to the ground by Mr. Tanko Gokuje and three (3) other warders. Mr.Okah had to intensify his struggle and resistance to prevent the completion of the criminal act. Mr Okah screamed for help and this was heard by other inmates.”

“Mr. Okah reported the foregoing event to the Officer in Charge of Kuje Prisons, DCP. Felix Lawrence who, in conjunction with the Kuje Prison authorities pleaded with him not to make a formal complaint, and further suppressed the incident.”

“We find the forgoing events very unfortunate, disheartening and totally unacceptable to our client and the entire society. This criminal act has been reported as a common and recurring phenomenon in the Nigerian Prisons. It simply shows the despicable level of moral decadence of the officers who are paid to take charge of prison inmates. It is our considered opinion that such criminal and immoral acts should not be tolerated or condoned in anyway.”

“We hereby call on you to use your good offices to urgently investigate the foregoing complaints and effect appropriate sanctions on the culprits, including their dismissal from Nigerian Prisons Services forthwith.”
